WinMX Gone!
Remember the popular WinMX P2P client which we all used to download MP3s after Napster died? On September 20th 2005, WinMX has suspended its services after receiving a legal threat letter from the RIAA.
WinMX is owned by a Canadian firm, FrontCode Technologies. A quick whois revealed that the WinMX.com domain now belongs to WinMX Technologies Associates, not FrontCode Technologies as it was in the past. And the domain registrar also reported that they have now relocated to Port Villa, Vanuatu. Were they trying to follow Sharman Network’s footsteps - a stunt they pulled to avoid presecution in the Netherlands?
Currently there is no way to connect to the WinMX network, unless there’re supernodes out there who are still connected. WinMX.com and Frontcode.com are currently not accessible.
Wall Street Journal has also identified Limewire and Bearshare to be the recipients of the letter.
