Is That All To Life?

“What does it all mean?”, I asked myself over and over yesterday.

I wondered over the life of the people around me. The middle-aged pharmacist with two high-school kids and his darling wife, who travels 32 miles to work every morning. The retired bank manager who denies his diabetic history while struggling, blaming it on old age. The wealthy husband who comes back home from work, enjoying his Scotch while his loving wife making sure their kids get good grades in school. The happy retired grandparents with tremendous amount of pleasure playing their music to each other.

The constant unreasonable demands by workplace superiors employees have to meet in their dead end jobs. Every single day of the year. They know they can make themselves a better life by leaving in search for a better job. Maybe it’s just a few miles down the stateline. But at the same time, there are things that keep them glued to their seats. Their kids, for one. Is that it? Kids ruining their entire life?

Then we have the Alfies out there. Who goes around spreading his seeds to little rubber tubes he buys from 7-11s. Who ironically wishes he has a peace of mind to know that there’s someone waiting for him at the end of the day. But what if… things didn’t go his way?

The aged in the Old Folks Home. Depressed. Lonely. Is that all that life could offer?

And finally the story of a janitor, who was once making US$210,000 a year from his old job. His mistake: took a week off because his son was admitted for leukemia. Is that life again?

Allie Keys (Dakota Fanning), who narrated Spielberg’s miniseries Taken said, “Life, all life, is about asking questions. Not about knowing answers. It is wanting to see what’s over the next hill, that keeps us all going”.

The constant need to know what’s next for us. Maybe that’s what life is all about. You think?

  3. Alicia: Yes, it’s depressing, isn’t it? The perfect life would only begin if Alicia goes on a date with Darryl. How about that? :D

Chen: Yes. Life goes on. Everyday. Boring. Mundane.
